During the fall 2018 semester, I was an intern at the i.lab at Magellan International School. This makerspace is managed by Patrick Benfield, who is also the lead UTeach Maker mentor. What surprised me about this place was that the space was open for all. Students from all grade levels in this K-8 school were welcomed. In addition to STEM classes using the space, design classes, humanities classes, and foreign language classes also frequently came. Even parents were invited for open-make time to engage in the same kinds of activities that their children did. It was great to see how Patrick set up the i.lab so that it was accessible for everyone. He created an online calendar where teachers and parents could sign up for sessions to use the makerspace. I learned that it takes a lot of organization to run a makerspace.
When I was not helping Patrick set up for classes or helping students, Patrick taught me how to use some of the equipment there. I learned how to 3D print, learned how to efficiently cut cardboard using a ZipSnip, and also got to practice laser cutting using a Glowforge. I was also allowed to work on my own projects. Working here was a meaningful experience.
