Pi Day Shirts

Updated: Apr 30, 2019

The Reagan ECHS math department and I wanted to celebrate Pi Day, so we thought of different ways to make that day enjoyable for both students and teachers. Here are the things that I created for Pi Day.

In this post, I will talk about how I helped create Pi Day shirts for teachers and administrators.

Pi Day Shirts

19 teachers, including me, signed up to each wear shirts with a number to write out some of the digits of pi. I also wanted the design to include "Pi Day 3-14-19" and "Reagan ECHS".

Attempt #1: Laser Printer and Acetone

We saw on the internet that you can use acetone to transfer a design printed with a laser printer onto a shirt. The design transferred onto the shirt very faintly, so we had to think of a different way.

Attempt #2: Contact Paper and Paint

I used a Silhouette Cameo to cut out the design on contact paper. After sticking the contact paper onto the shirts, two math teachers and I spent 3 hours painting the 19 shirts. It took so long because the Silhouette Cameo did not fully cut out the letters, so we had to manually pick out some of the letters and numbers when it should have peeled off easily.

The next day, the paint was dried, and the contact paper was ready to be peeled.

Teachers and administrators lined up to write out the first 19 digits of pi

The shirts came out great, and all of the teachers loved them. I wear the shirts every Friday to show my Reagan ECHS school spirit, but I also wear it so I can wear jeans to school!

Reflection

The next time I make shirts, I would adjust the settings of the Silhouette Cameo to make sure that its blade actually cuts through the contact paper. This would have saved me a lot of time.

I would definitely do this again. This is a cheap alternative to making custom shirts without using heat transfer vinyl, which can be pricey.
